Ambition & Strategy

Green Park Aalsmeer Gebiedsontwikkeling B.V.’s ambition is to systematically transform a run-down greenhouse growing area into a modern business park. The productive capacity of the area guarantees a return on the contribution made by Uithoorn Council and Aalsmeer Council to rerouting the N201 trunk road. Green Park Aalsmeer wants to focus mainly on future developments in the flower and plant trade.

Together with FloraHolland Aalsmeer (Aalsmeer Flower Auction) and the other glasshouse horticulture areas in Aalsmeer, Green Park Aalsmeer is part of the Aalsmeer and environs Greenport (growing under glass hub), one of the five Greenports designated in the Dutch government’s spatial planning policy document.

The area is also a link between the current residential centre of Aalsmeer and the future residential centre of Nieuw Oosteinde. This imposes tough urban planning quality requirements in order to link the two residential centres to each other properly in the future. A recreational and ecological link is also being sought in the area between the River Amstel and the Haarlemmermeer.

Strategy

Green Park Aalsmeer is a business park especially for the flower and plant trade and is close to Aalsmeer Flower Auction. Green Park Aalsmeer is intended for companies that are primarily focused on the auction and moreover want to invest in knowledge and logistics. Green Park Aalsmeer promotes their mutual collaboration and joint marketing. This improves the competitiveness of individual businesses and the sector as a whole.

Functional
Green Park Aalsmeer acts as one business park in dealings with the outside world by admitting firms that fit in well with the concept. Green Park Aalsmeer is being recognized nationally and internationally as the place where the latest developments in the industry are born and then spread all over the world. The heart of Green Park Aalsmeer is Bloomin’Holland, a global business centre where the Dutch flower and plant trade presents itself. It’s a place where the international trade can find out about the latest trends in the sector. Bloomin’Holland also has a public function. All year round visitors can come and see what the Dutch flower and plant world has to offer.

Spatial
Green Park Aalsmeer plans to become an inspiring urban design and landscape architecture area in which all elements (commercial buildings, water features and planting) project a clear common image. There are some special aspects that are relevant in this respect, for example:

  1. The Airport Design Decree (LIB) and the air corridor for flights taking off from Schiphol’s Aalsmeerbaan runway. The zone affected by the decree covers a substantial area. The height of the buildings and the number of people permitted to work in them are limited in this zone. The building height is also restricted by the windmill in Stommeerkade (the wind around the windmill must not be disrupted).
  2. According to the Joint Local Authority Area Vision (IGGV) the area along Machineweg is zoned as a recreational and ecological zone.
  3. The high level of demand for water storage capacity in the area. The plan also takes this into account.
  4. The incorporation of three roads - Hornweg, Aalsmeerderweg and Oosteinderweg – calls for transition zones between the roads and commercial activities. The zoning plan provides for this by means of buffers consisting of planting and water.
Finally the new N201 trunk road has to be fitted into the area properly. In the Master Plan the N201 is positioned inside a narrower zone with slip roads that connect to two parallel roads along the N201.
